Lady Tigers open district with a couple of losses

Cagers can’t overcome scoring woes

The L ady T iger s fel l to Smithville 57-22 Tuesday night on the road and 65-20 in the District 23-3A tip off Friday night.

In the loss Tuesday, Victoria Drake accounted for seven points and two rebounds, while Shalona Mitchell added five.

Rockdale (6-15, 0-2) trailed 35- 10 at intermission and attempted just 27 shots on the evening against Smithville (10- 11, 2-0).

Against No. 11 Navasota, the Lady Tigers hung with the Lady Rattlers in the early going, but could not keep up the pace.

After buckets from Jill Young and Lela Mitchell, the Lady Tigers led early 4-2, but were outscored 12-2 the rest of the way.

The ranked Lady Rattlers (18- 2) believed outshooting their opponent was the path to victory. They put up 69 shots in the contest to Rockdale’s 30 and shot just 25 percent from the floor.

Rockdale went six minutes without a field goal in the second quarter without a field goal and trailed 25-10 at halftime.

Navasota began to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers 23-2 for a 48-12 advantage as senior Sofia Rojas accounted for the lone Rockdale basket with 2:11 left in the quarter from the left side.

Rojas led the Lady Tigers in scoring off the bench with eight points while pulling down four rebounds.

Lela Mitchell chipped in four points and five rebounds, while Drake, Visha Henderson, Devin Flores and Janeene Maloy had two points each.

The L ady T igers t ravel to LaGrange (12-6, 2-0) on Friday, then host Giddings (9-12, 2- 0) on Tuesday.
