Vargas Vargas MJH students to perform ‘Opal’ Jan. 26

MILANO–A one time only performance of “A Girl Named Opal” by Milano Junior High theatre students will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26 at the high school cafeteria, director Sherry LaGrone announced.

Admission prices are $3 for adults, $2 for students and nonschool aged children and senior citizens are free.

A silent auction will be held as well with proceeds going to the eighth grade class trip to NASA.

Locals earn degrees from Baylor Univ.

WACO–Baylor University conferred degrees on more than 800 graduates during fall commencement exercises on Dec. 18 at the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus. Two of those degree went to local residents.

Tanya Fay Baker of Rockdale was awarded a Masters of Arts in English.

Sara Gene Caldwell of Rogers received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.

Vargas auditions for all-state band

Rockdale High School senior Heather Vargas recently participated in the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) all-state band auditions at Waco Robinson High School.

On Jan. 8, Vargas competed and finished seventh out of 20 flute players in the area for a shot at the allstate band. Only the top four are selected for the honor.

“Ranking seventh out of the elite group of 20 is a great accomplishment,” RHS band director Adrian Acevedo said. “Congratulations Heather and special thanks to Leah Thomason for helping Heather prepare for this competition.”
