Rockdale economic summit talks teamwork, coordination, demographics
It takes a village....to promote a village.
That was the under riding theme of Rockdale’s first-ever “economic summit” which drew about 50 community leaders to the Patterson Center Thursday.
The topic was Rockdale, how to promote it in order to attract new businesses to the area in the wake of Alcoa’s closing. Full Story

Ex-con charged with injuring second child
Victims, 3 years, 13 months, are siblings
A 24-year-old Rockdale man was arrested Monday and charged again with injury to a child.
Curtis Wade Russell had previously served jail time after being convicted for injuring the victim’s sibling, who was then a 13-month-old baby.
Russell is being held in the Milam County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bond. Full Story
The ‘ultimate accompanist’
Music club honors a legend from RHS band’s golden era
Gerry Selden-Janik of Easterly is the organist at the 1,300- member First United Methodist Church in Bryan, playing a new $500,000 pipe organ. She is paid for her services.
She also now accompanies 53 Bryan High School students preparing for solo and ensemble competitions. She’s also paid for that. Full Story

My family is very large, in more than one sense of the word. We are always loud (to the point of obnoxious is others’ points of view) but always have fun, no matter the situation. I have so many childhood memories that I cherish of times spent at my grandmothers’ homes in Gause and Milano. Full Story
Project Graduation to hold pancake supper Feb. 8
Milano High School seniors are raising money for their Project Graduation event in May. The drug- free, alcohol-free all night event is held after commencement ceremonies at the school cafeteria. The group has two upcoming fund-raisers planned.
The first is a dessert silent auction to be held Tuesday, Feb. 1 at the high school gym during the scheduled basketball games. Full Story
Lady Tigers chalk up first district victory
Starting five play major minutes in win
With all apologies to the Rockdale bench, the starters took care of business.
The Lady Tigers captured their first league victory of the year by besting Caldwell 34-26 Friday night at Tiger Gym.
The Lady Tigers stand 7-18 overall and 1-5 in District 23- 3A play after falling to Navasota Tuesday night, 55-19, on the road. Full Story
Rattlers dial long distance against Tigers
Navasota rains in 12 bombs in district win
While Rockdale offered up a zone defense against Navasota to solve, the Rattlers figured the further out they shot, they wouldn’t have to deal with any type of defender.
Navasota pulled the trigger on 12 three-pointers Tuesday night to silence the Tigers 65-45 at Tiger Gym in District 23-3A action. Full Story

We had our Economic Summit last week and I was very encouraged with the turnout. We had entities represented from all over Rockdale and there was some good information provided by city manager Kelvin Knauf about the different responsibilities and impact that all of the groups have on promoting Rockdale. Milam jobless rate down slightly to end year
State unemployment rate well below nation’s 9.4%
Unemployment rates looked better at the end of 2010 across the state and in Central Texas, according to reports released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). Jobless numbers fell to 10.4 in Milam County for December 2010, compared to 11.1 the same time last year. Full Story
MCAD: April 15 deadline for filing property tax renditions
CAMERON–Chief Appraiser Patr icia J. Moraw reminds businesses to render t heir property with the Milam County Appraisal District by April 15. To render is to list the taxable inventory, furniture and fixtures, machinery and equipment and other property a business owned or managed as of Jan. 1. The appraisal district uses the information to calculate property values. Full Story
