CENTERVILLE—Funeral services for Lenton Speer, 84, of Marquez, formerly Rockdale, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Walters Funeral Home in Center v ille. Gene Darby will officiate the service and interment w ill follow in Concord Cemetery with memorial honors presented by the U.S. Army.
Walters Funeral Home in Centerville is in charge of all arrangements.
Visitation was scheduled for 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
Lenton Speer was born on Dec. 12, 1926, in Concord to Ben Thomas and Iva (Seale) Speer.
He attended Concord schools and always joked about having graduated in the top 10% of his class of only seven students.
Mr. Speer served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married his wife of almost 62 years, Irene Ellison, on Jan. 26, 1949.
They lived in Rockdale for over 23 years where Mr. Speer was a member of the Rockdale Baseball Association.
Mr. Speer retired from Alcoa as a supervisor and he and his wife made their home in Marquez.
He was the pastor and elder of the Marquez Church of Christ for 40 years and a faithful member of the Centex Parkinson’s Support Group.
His favorite pastime was tending to cattle and ranching.
Mr. Speer was honored with a lifetime membership in the Texas Limousin Association. He was also a member of the Concord Alumni Association and a charter member of the Marquez Chamber of Commerce.
Anyone who knew Mr. Speer knew that he was also Bluebell Ice Cream’s biggest fan.
Mr. Speer passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 in Bryan.
He is preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Benton Speer; brother, Ray Seale Speer; and three sisters, Beatrice Speer, Mar y Estelle McMichael and Kathlyn Speer.
Survivors include wife, Irene (Ellison) Speer; sons and daughters in-law, Mike and Betty Speer, Tim and Alice Speer, all of Marquez; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Mike Burrough of Rockdale; six grandchildren, Kyle Speer and wife Brook, Michelle Lehmkuhl and husband Matthew, Kent Speer and wife Tina, Lance Burrough and w ife Jennifer, Delana Speer and Ben Speer; eight great-grandchildren, Kendall, Clay and Brody Speer, Tyler and Hannah Lehmkuhl, Melanie and Barrett Speer, Parker Burrough and one great-grandchild on the way.
