Evening bats migrate to Texas during winter
The state of Texas is home to thirty-two species of bats. Seven of those species make their home here in Milam County. I wrote about one of those seven last year, the Mexican Free-Tailed bat. The United Nations has named 2012 the “International Year of the Bat”. Full Story
Nature Fest photo deadline March 31
The El Camino Real Chapter of Master Naturalists is again sponsoring a Nature Photo Contest. It will be held in conjunction with the second annual Milam County Nature Festival at Wilson-Ledbetter Park in Cameron on Saturday, April 9, spokesperson Paula Engelhardt announced. Full Story

Annual BIG conference ahead in Waco
The 49th annual Blackland Income Growth, or BIG, Conference w ill be held Feb. 8- 9 at the Heart of Texas Fair Complex in Waco. This conference highlights the major commodity groups within the Blacklands region, including brain, beef, horticulture, cotton, wildlife, forages and horse. Full Story
Sweetheart dinner, dance reset Feb.26
The annual Rockdale Ag Boosters Sweetheart dinner and dance has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26, Robin Heintze has announced. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 7.
The night will also include a silent auction at 6:30 and a dance with “Branded Heart” starting at 8. Tickets are $25 per person. Full Story
Civic, school groups holding fund-draisers in community
With local civic organizations and school groups holding fund-raisers this month and in the weeks to follow, there will be plenty to do in Milano.
Milano High seniors are raising money for their Project Graduation event in May, a drug-free, alcohol-free, all-night event following commencement. Full Story
Local CIP, 4-H groups to meet Monday
Monday w ill be a busy evening for meetings here. Gause Community Improvement Program (CIP) will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 7 in the Gause Community Center. Gause 4-H Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the school cafeteria.
This is a week earlier for the 4- H Club but they will be addressing Valentines for veterans, making it necessary to meet earlier to get them delivered by Feb. 14. Full Story
