United Way nears 40 percent

The South Milam County United Way is nearing 40 percent of its $50,000 goal for its 2011 campaign and its president is optimistic the goal will be met.

“ We have money coming in and some good support, not only from our ‘old reliables’ but also from new supporters,” Raymon Puente, South Milam UW president, said.

“We’re hoping to repeat our success of last year,” he added.

Puente said the drive is currently nearing $20,000. That would be 40 percent of the $50,000 goal.

ADJUSTED—Last year’s goal was also $50,000 and the drive actually exceeded that sum by about $2,000, according to Puente.

“We had to make some adjustments depending on funding requests by some of the agencies we serve,” Puente said.

“After those adjustments were made, and we raised the extra $2,000, we were able to fund all the agencies at 100 percent of those adjusted levels,” he said.

He expects the current drive to have a similar outcome. “I think we’ll get there,” he said.

POST-ALCOA—The United Way drive is one indicator of the “post-Alcoa” look of Rockdale’s economic community.

Before Alcoa closed the

Rockdale Operations smelter in 2008, the South Milam

UW goal was $120,000.

“Luminant is now our largest contributor, and they do a great job,” Puente said. “Of course, it’s just not the size

Alcoa was.”

“We encourage people to donate,” he said. “Look at the agencies we serve. They support children and the elderly and we also help fund volunteer fire departments.”

DONATIONS—Puente said donations from businesses, groups or individuals may be made to: South Milam County United Way, PO Box 189, Rockdale, 76567.

“South Milam UW can bill you monthly, quarterly or annually,” he said.

Anyone wanting a UW board member to speak to employees concerning the drive is asked to call Puente at 210-638-5701.

Entities which will benefit from the drive were listed as follows:

Love & Learning Center, Milano, Minerva, Black Jack and Thorndale Volunteer Fire Departments.

Christmas Round-Up, Eastside Tutoring, Milam County Child Protective Services, Original Twelve Civic & Social Club, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Rockdale Christian Services, Rockdale Multi-Service Center; Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels, South Milam County Boy and Cub Scouts.
