Leaping out to a 14-point halftime lead, the Tigers watched that bulge evaporate and finally succumbed in overtime 62-59 Tuesday night at Tiger Gym in the season finale.

The Tigers close out the season at 9-16 overall and 2-8 in District 23-3A play.

A Rockdale basketball team has not posted a winning record or a playoff appearance since 1997.

A surprise Smithville squad— 9-19 a year ago—wrapped up second place in district at 19-11 overall and 7-3 in league play.

Navasota finished off its perfect league ledger with a 86-53 victory over Giddings and is 17-7 on the year.

Rockdale led 35-21 at intermission after turning in one of the better halves of the year, but managed just 14 points in the second half as Smithville played catch up, doubling the Tigers point production and outscoring them 13-10 in overtime.

William Dean pumped in 17 points to lead the Tigers, while Cody Skubal added 16 and Ethan Brinkley 13.

Le’Raven Clark secured 11 rebounds and Skubal nine.

Trailing 53-36 heading into the final period, the Tigers put on a last- ditch effort, but fell short in a 68-56 loss to district champion Navasota last Friday on the road.

Skubal pumped in 14 points, while grabbing nine rebounds, while Clark snared 13 rebounds and scored six points.

Recent junior varsity move-up Zach Garza chipped in 11 points on five-of-seven shooting along with three steals.
