Milano beats Mumford at the buzzer

Eagles to play Evadale on Wednesday

BRYAN--In amazing playoff fashion, the No. 5 Milano Eagles (27-3) defeated the Mumford Mustangs (27-7) 46-43 on Friday night with a three pointer at the buzzer from senior Jaxson Robinson in front of a packed house at Viking Gym.

The Eagles victory in the area round of the Class A Division I state playoffs advance them to a matchup against Evadale on Wednesday at Willis High School.  The regional quarterfinal game is set to start at 7 p.m.  The winner of Wednesday’s game will advance to the Region IV tournament on March 4-5 in Austin.

Robinson’s shot came after the game was tied at 43-43 and Mumford thwarted four Milano in bounds pass attempts out of bounds.  With .82 seconds left in the game, Robinson took the in bounds pass from Jordan Melton and then turned around to shoot the game winning bucket over two Mustangs defenders.  The Eagle bench stormed the court after the shot went in.

Robinson’s buzzer beater was the second amazing shot of the night for Milano.  Junior John Jentsch chunked a shot from midcourt that sailed through the net for three points as the buzzer sounded to end the first half, sending Milano to the locker room with a 28-24 lead.

Jentsch led Milano with 11 points and 11 boards.  Robinson and sophomore Dominique Messer each scored 10.

Freshman Aubrie King led Mumford with 21 points.
