BRYAN—James Saegert and his wife Cindy have been part of the Rockdale community for two decades, influencing generations of RHS students.

The couple was recognized for one of the specific interests they share after being named t he Bra zos Va lley Hudd le Coach of the Year by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

RHS students Victoria Drake and Lacie Lewis were also recognized with “excellence of character” awards.

Saegert, a Lexington native, has been a coach at Rockdale for 20 years, longer than any coach in RHS history.

He and Cindy have faithfully led the FCA Huddle for the past eight years.

Along with Drake and Lewis, students from Buffalo, Madisonville, Navasota, Brenham, Normangee and Rudder were recognized for their service to FCA.

The testimonials for the Saegerts were plentiful.

“Coaches are often the most important adult role model in the lives of young people,” said Sandi Isbell of the Bryan FCA. “Usually overworked and under-appreciated, their inf luence impacts thousands of athletes, students, parents and fans long after the final whistle.

“ Through outreach events, Bible studies, training, resources and conferences, FCA encourages coaches to cultivate a biblical heart for coaching, their players, and God.”

“Coach Saegert is the epitome of what a professional and role model should look like,” said RISD Athletic Director Jeff Miller.

“Not only is he a great coach of athletics, he is a great coach of life. I cannot say enough about how much he has meant to the students of this school district.”

Drake Drake “ The Saegerts are the most honest, hard-working, self less people I know,” said Tiger baseball coach Jarad Richards. “They both would do anything for anyone.”

“Both of my boys have gone to FCA here in Rockdale with the Saegerts and it is a great thing they are doing for our youth,” said Tiger Coach Bart Gibbs.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes was formed in 1954 and includes athletes and coaches from the professional level all the way down to junior high sports.
