Rockdale falls to host Taylor in championship

Reporter/Bill Martin The Rockdale Lady Tigers surged to four wins to reach the finals of the Taylor Tournament where they lost to the host Ducks in the championship.

The Lady Tigers stand 9-5-1

To reach the finals, the Lady Tigers defeated Thrall 7-3, Burnet 3- 0, San Antonio East Central 12-0 and Groesbeck 8-3, while losing to Thorndale 8-3 and Taylor 10-2.

In the final, Krista Phillips, Britta Byrd (triple), Amanda Boyud, Maci Wages and Mac Tater had one hit apiece.

Kayleigh Montelongo absorbed the loss, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs.

Marissa Mireles went 3-for- 3, clubbing three doubles and knocking in two runs, while also swiping three bases against Groesbeck.

Phillips, Wages, Tater and Jill Young ( home run) all banged out two hits in Rockdale’s 11- hit attack as they also stole 10 bases.

Montelongo was the winner, allowing five hits and three runs, while fanning three.

In the loss to Thorndale, Wages led the way with two hits, a double and RBI.

Phillips was the loser after allowing five runs and four hits.

In the blanking of East Central, Montelongo tossed a no-hitter, striking out 10 and was backed by a 14-hit onslaught.

Mireles and Wages racked up three hits apiece, with Mireles slugging two doubles.

Byrd (four stolen bases), Boyd and Montelongo (double, triple) drove in two runs each.

Montelongo surrendered just one hit in the Lady Tigers’ shutout of Burnet.

Young provided two hits and an RBI triple.

In the opener, Wages was 3-for- 3 and Rebecca Lee brought home two runs against Thrall.

Phillips was the winner after allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out three.
