Council okays street paving plans, hears plea from church members
It won’t be a criminal offense to leave your garbage cans at the curb more than 16 hours just yet.
City council members tabled a motion to do just that Monday evening after the proposed ordinance drew strong criticism from council member Gerri Offield and negative comments from councilman Doug Calame and Mayor Larry Jones. Full Story
Rockdale raid targets drug dealer
Month-long investigation yields 5 pounds of pot, $2,300 in cash, weapons
A month-long probe targeting a man investigators believed to be a drug dealer came to an end Monday when officers stormed a San Gabriel Street residence and arrested an armed subject.
Jonah Zamora, 30, who lives in the 700 block of San Gabriel, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana (5 to 50 pounds). Full Story

Science night winners listed at junior-high
Visitors filed into all four Rockdale ISD campuses for Texas Public School Week activities last week.
There were large crowds for “eat with your student” breakfasts for moms, dads and two for grandparents.”

Lady Tigers’ top hitter may be lost for the season
It just seems to hurt more when you get bad injury news during an off week and that’s the case over spring break with the Lady Tiger softball team.
Senior Megan Hearn, who was Big Blue’s leading hitter last year, and was off to a hot start in 2011, has torn her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and faces an extended period of recovery. Full Story

Tigers face top teams at Brownwood
Will play four games in five days during spring break
In District 23-3A, the Rockdale baseball team will face some stiff competition and the Tigers certainly got a preview of things to come with a bracket loaded with quality opponents this past weekend at the Brownwood Tournament.
The Tigers defeated Fort Stockton 12- 6, while falling to Brownwood 15-4, Stephenville 10-0 and Denton Liberty Christian 17-7 Full Story
Milam unemployment rate back to over 11%
Jobless numbers in double figures 23 out of last 25 months
Unemployment rates across the Central Texas area have jumped to start off the new year, according to reports released Thursday by the Texas Workforce Commission ( TWC). Jobless numbers rose to 11.1 in Milam County for January, the highest since February 2010. Unemployment was at its highest a year ago at 11.8 percent in Milam County. Full Story
Tax rebates still on decline for Rockdale
Milam County revenue down for year
AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced last week that the state sales tax revenue in February was $1.75 billion, up 9.7 percent compared to February 2010.
The City of Rockdale and Milam County are down in rebate money compared to the amounts received in March 2010. Other cities in the county were up in amounts received compared to a year ago. Full Story
