McClaren

CAMERON— Graveside services for Howard Max McClaren, 93, of Cameron were held Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Marlow Cemetery near Cameron with Rev. Tim Cheatham officiating.

Mr. McClaren died Friday, March 11, in a local hospital.

He was born Jan. 5, 1918, in the Marlow community of Milam County to Sherwood and Josephine (Shafer) McClaren.

He married Margie Lou Pratt on March 16, 1947, and she preceded him in death in 1981.

A lifelong educator, Mr. McClaren began his career as a journalist for the Cameron Herald, then became a teacher and band leader in Buckholts.

Mr. McClaren also taught for Cameron ISD, becoming principal at Ben Milam Elementary School, then went to work as county superintendent for Milam County.

He was instrumental in starting adult education programs and Title One in Milam County.

Mr. McClaren was Milam County Democratic chairman for over 32 years, was a member of Cameron Rotary Club, Central Texas Hospital Auxiliary and was active with the March of Dimes.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Madeline Perrone, and three brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Melanie Reed of Cameron; four grandchildren, Steven Perrone of Houston, Jamie Spikes and Kendra Reed, both of Bryan, Becky Fowler of Waxahachie; and five grandchildren, Scarlet and Damian Spikes, Trinity Perrone, Reed White and River Thomas; also, numerous nieces and nephews.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
