No ‘water line insurance’ needed

City warns residents about solicitation from private company

Official looking diagram with letter confused some into thinking it was city-affiliated. Official looking diagram with letter confused some into thinking it was city-affiliated. T he City of Rockdale isn’t requiring its residents to take out home owners’ water line “insurance,” but City Manager Kelvin Knauf says letters mailed out by a firm which lists an Austin address might leave that impression.

Knauf said local customers have received letters from “Home Service” with a solicitation for “water service line coverage” and a reply-by date.

“Customers have asked us if this is something the city requires,” Knauf said. “It is not.”

But the official-looking document could be interpreted that way. It states:

“In a recent review of our service area, we have noticed that your property does not have Water Service Line Coverage from Home Service.

“ You are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the exterior water line at the above address. Repairing a broken water line could cost you thousands of dollars without coverage.”

Service is offered for $4.99 per month.

“We are not saying this isn’t an actual company or that it won’t provide, or deliver, the coverage promised,” Knauf said. “We are saying this is not something that is required by the City of Rockdale.”

Last year, two similarly-named companies (Home Service USA and Home Service USA Repair Management) reached an agreement with the state of Kentucky over similar mail solicitations.
