Last week we had our 59th annual Chamber Banquet. The entertainment was charming with the Rising Star Baptist Church Praise Dancers and the Guadulapanas Ballet Folklorico from Cameron. Both groups of young people entertained the crowd as only young people can. We laughed, we were impressed and we were glad to see young people involved in such worthwhile endeavors. Thanks too, to the sponsors of those groups in Stephanie Washington with the Praise Dancers and Aurora Cardona with the Guadulapanas.
The food was prepared by Busy Bea and was delicious. The award winners were very deserving and it was a pleasure to honor them for the outstanding work they do in our community. Cindy Jerman, Citizen of the Year, has worked hard to make Rockdale a better place. Lucile Estell, Outstanding Citizen, is such a wonderful lady and works so hard to put Rockdale “on the map.” Original Twelve Civic and Social Club, Inc., Organization of the Year, has worked through the years in many ways to support area organizations and events.
Bad to the Bone Motorcycle Club, Good Neighbor Award, works tirelessly to raise money for organizations and needy people. Midway Grocery, owners Jim and Shelly Eanes, won the Business of the Year award because of all the good support they have given through the years to all types of events and organizations. Ambassador of the Year was awarded to Julia Cardona for a great job in the Chamber Ambassadors.
Charlie McGregor of KRXT was our emcee and Mayor Larry Don Jones was our award presenter. The great thing about the evening, in addition to everything I just mentioned, was that there were 300 people there to support Rockdale, enjoy being together and just having fun. Rockdale is moving forward and with the positive vibes in the room I know we have nothing to worry about. We will all work together and deal with each situation as it develops.
We have a busy week this week. On Friday, we are having a ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m. and grand opening for Lee’s Landing at their location on West Cameron Ave. Go by and celebrate with Lee and his crew. Also this weekend is the Longhorn Show on April 1-3 at Fair Park. Go out and see these regal animals.
On Saturday, April 2 is Rising Star Baptist Church’s garage sale. They are raising funds for their new church so go out and support them. Another big event this weekend is the MARC Run on Saturday at The Ranch. Barbecue plates will be sold at 4 p.m. with a live auction following. Come out and support the MARC Run as they raise funds for the new MARC building on Pecos St.
