Cleanup

Rockdale residents could put big dent in trash situation Saturday

There’s been a lot of talk about cleaning up Rockdale in recent weeks and months. Local residents will have a chance to do a lot more than just talk on Saturday.

The citywide spring Stash Your Trash cleanup day is set for 8 a.m. to 12-noon at Fair Park and it’s shaping up to be the biggest ever.

It’s totally free. You can dispose of household items including furniture, mattresses and just about anything else except oil, tires, hazardous chemicals or liquid paint.

Officials ask for metal to be separated from regular trash for easier disposal.

The city will also set up its chipper and is asking residents to trim tree limbs, especially those close to curbs. Limbs must be 4 inches or smaller in diameter and must be loaded from a truck or trailer.

You can even get help transporting trash to the park on Saturday. Call Rockdale’s Public Works Department at 446-5620 or 446-7320 and they’ll dispatch someone.

If you’d like to pre-schedule trash pickup in advance on Saturday, that can be arranged too.

You can go on-line at www.rockdalecityhall.com and fill out a form.

If you’re bringing trash on your own, go in the main gate at Fair Park, off Mill Street, and you’ll be directed to all the action.

Exit will be at Gate 5 (Roberts Street).

In addition to all the above, troops of student volunteers will fan out along US 79, looking for items to bring to the cleanup.

As you might expect, such an effort with military-style logistics needs lots of volunteer people power. Anyone who wants to help, with pickups and trailers if possible, should meet at the city’s Mill Street yard (301 Mill) around 8 a.m.

Let’s make it a “clean sweep.”—M.B.
