East Texans dominate Dewberry

Cameron natives Gerardo Moreno and Robert Smith left the prairies of Milam County for the pine forests of East Texas, but they came back in a big way Saturday.

Moreno won the inaugural 10K event at the 12th annual Dewberry Jam Fun Run, sponsored by Alpha Tau Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi which raised $5,000 for the sorority’s upgrade projects for Rockdale parks.

In its 12 years the runs have raised $72,000 for park projects.

Moreno and Smith now hail from Nacogdoches and run for the Pineywoods Athletic Club, which Moreno founded.

They ran together for the first 5Ks. Smith won the 5K event in 16: 46, 24 seconds ahead of RHS distance specialist Jacob Gerren.


Reporter/Mike Brown Reporter/Mike Brown Moreno then took another “lap” around northwest Rockdale and won the 10K in 34:28, a minute and 22 seconds better than runner-up Matt Buchhorn of Georgetown.
