Dean advances to state roundup

Five 4-Hers competed in the District 8 4-H contests in April in Stephenville. During the Roundup contests, William Dean placed first in the senior division with his Shooting Sports Educational Presentation. William will advance to the State 4- H Roundup contest at Texas A&M University in June. He is a member of the Rockdale 4-H Club.

During the District Fashion Show, Calla Vinton received second place in the Buying Dressy Junior Division and Kendall Lee received third place in the Buying Dressy Intermediate Division. Both members are from the Gause 4-H Club.

Also competing at Roundup, Kassidy Hundle placed first in the junior division with her Safety Educational Presentation and Charity Capps participated in the Share the Fun vocal contest. Kassidy is a member of the Cameron 4-H Club and Charity is a member of the Gause 4-H Club.

Congratulations to all of the 4-Hers for representing Milam County 4-H at district contests.

SLOGAN CONTEST–Congratulations to Jacob Pedroza of the Thorndale 4-H Club for submitting the winning slogan ““Milam County 4-H: Green and Growing”. This slogan will be used as the theme for the 2011-12 Milam County 4-H handbook , calendar and other 4-H activities.

Now that we have the slo- gan, 4-Hers can submit drawings for the 4-H calendar that will be distributed on Oct. 2 during National 4-H Week. Drawings need to be submitted on letter size white paper. Most calendar drawings will be printed in black and white, but your drawings can be submitted in black and white or color.

Drawings need to be received by Sept. 16 to the Extension office in Cameron.

HORSE PROJECT–The 4-H Horse Project Group will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the home of Larry and Priscilla Jackson. This newly formed group will have a presentation from a local farrier Thomas Harris, Jr. as well as a saddling and grooming demonstration by Larry Jackson. The group leaders will be talking with the 4-Hers about questions for their vet.

During the workshop, you will have one last chance to submit your validation paperwork and fee. Horse(s) must be validated in order for 4-Hers to compete in 4-H Horse Shows in June and July.

2011 ROCKDALE FAIR TAG-IN–Entries for the Market Show will be due at each individual tag-in or pick-up at a cost of $15 fee per entry. Ownership and tag-in dates for this year’s Rockdale Fair are as follows:

• May 19– Steer tag-in from 5- 7 p.m. at Arledge Feed Lot, US 79W.

• May 27– Broiler orders due at Milam County Extension Office. Price not available to date. Broiler pick-up will be on Aug. 31 at Home Demonstration Building at Rockdale’s Fair Park.

• June 22–Turkey pick-up from 5-7 p.m. at Home Demonstration Building at Rockdale’s Fair Park.

• July 9–Lambs, swine and goats tag- in w ill 7- 9 a. m. at Rockdale Fair Park.

• Sept. 14–Rabbits tag-in will be from 5-7 p.m. at Home Demonstration Building at Rockdale’s Fair Park.

MAJOR SHOW TAG-IN–If you ordered major show tags for steer, lamb, goat or swine, the tag-in date is June 27 at Arledge Feed Lot, Hwy 79 west of Rockdale. Major steer tag-in will start at 7 a.m. followed by lamb, goat and swine tag-in. If you have questions, contact Milam County Extension Office at 254- 697-7045.
