Teens caught in Rockdale after shotgun slaying of woman
A 50-year-old San Gabriel area woman was killed by two shotgun blasts at her home Monday afternoon and two Rockdale-area teens have been charged with capital murder.
Sheriff David Greene said Sandra “Sandy” Phillips died during a home invasion in the 7300 block of FM 486 when she was hit twice in the chest with blasts from a .12-gauge shotgun. Full Story

‘Nuisance’ rules (dis)cussed Monday
‘We have enough laws,’ visitor tells City Council
Rockdale City Council members discussed an all-encompassing nuisance ordinance Monday in a workshop session that included an earful of input from a council visitor.
“It’s going to be a nuisance to live in Rockdale,” realtor Judith Matula told the council. “We have enough laws. You can’t write an ordinance to cover every single situation.” Full Story
Senate plan better for RISD
Recent action by the Texas Senate, and an education bill being considered by the Texas House of Representatives, appear to have eased the school finance crisis somewhat, so far as the Rockdale ISD is concerned. Full Story
Early voting starts Monday for elections
Early voting for the May 7 Rockdale city and school elections begins Monday and continues through May 10.
Both city and school early voting will be at City Hall.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for May 4 and 5 when there are extended voting hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Final day to request a ballot by mail is May 6. Full Story

Nocturnal Fest returns this weekend to Apache Pass
A musical event which drew one of the largest crowds in Milam County history last September is returning to Apache Pass this weekend.
Nocturnal Fest will unreel from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the venue on the San Gabriel River, eight miles northwest of Rockdale on FM 908.
