Grass is greener at state tournament
So for good measure, this year’s quintet made sure there wouldn’t be another half centurt lapse.
Rallying on the back nine on the final day, the Tigers whisked past Sealy by improving their first round score by four strokes and capturing the Region III Tournament at Panorama Village in Conroe.
The Class 3A state tournament will be held May 12-13 at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.
The Tigers will be joined by Sealy, Perr y ton, Prosper, Andrews, Fredericksburg, Lampasas and defending state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove.
Fredericksburg and Prosper are to make repeat appearances as well.
Gatesville, a runner-up in 2010 and champion in 2009, will not make a trip to Austin for the first time in five years. The Hornets finished out of the running in fourth place at regionals, eight strokes behind third place Caldwell.
Rockdale placed sixth at last year’s rain-shortened state meet after placing second to Gatesville in regional.
Despite their early deficit, the Tigers won by a comfortable seven-stroke margin, 684 to 691, over second place Sealy.
“ We got behind on the second day on the front nine and then pulled ahead on the back nine,” said Rockdale Coach Dusty Loewe of the Tiger comeback. “It was touch and go all day. Caldwell, Sealy and Gatesville were all trying to make runs.”
Sophomore Kirk Williams fired in a 75 on the final day for a 156 total, good enough for third medalist honors.
After an opening round of 82, Patrick David carded an 88 on the second day to follow Williams with a 170 total.
Williams and David were on the team that visited Austin last year.
“Patrick and Kirk played well and I think being in this position last year did help,” Loewe said.
Grant Galbreath followed with a (90- 89) 179, while Garrett Korenek had a (91- 90) 181 and senior Casey Burrough shaved off 11 strokes from his first round score to pencil in a (99-88) 187.
The trip to state has to be particularly gratifying for Burrough, who missed out on the experience after losing in a playoff to teammate David last year.
“I think we have a real shot at medaling this year,” Loewe said. “The course (Roy Kizer) is similar to Pecan Lakes in Navasota where we have shot a 312 . If we can shoot around that, we have a chance.
“Kirk is really playing well right now and Patrick is playing some of his best golf so far. If everyone plays to their potential, I like our chances of medaling.”
