Milano’s Garza, Sanders headed to state meet

SAN ANTONIO– Milano’s Brandon Garza and Thomas Sanders are heading to the state track meet in Class A after finishing in the top two of the Region IV meet held at Converse Judson ISD Stadium.

Garza won the boys pole vault with jump of 13-feet. The junior out distanced his nearest competitor by six inches. He will compete at the state meet Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m.

Sanders’ leap of 21 feet 8.75 inches was good enough for second place in the boys long jump and a trip to the state meet. The senior missed out in the triple jump last year by three and a half inches. He also finished ninth in the triple jump this year at regionals with a jump of 40 feet, 8 inches.

Sophomore Dominique Messer is sitting on the bubble for the state meet with a thrid place finish in the boys 400 meters. His time of 51.59 might get him in that final ninth slot at state. New this year is that all four region’s third place finishers are compared and the best time/jump/throw/height of those four gets in.

The Eagles mile relay team had advanced to the regional meet, but withdrew prior to the competition due to injuries.

Milano finished eight in the team standings for the region meet w ith 24 points. Yorktown won the team title with 55 points.

The last Milano boy to qualify for state was Joseph Evans in the pole vault in 2004.

No Thorndale tracksters will advance to Austin.

The mile realy team consisting of Colton Youngblood, Dustin Schneider, Kasey Corcoron and Steven McKendrick were seventh at 3:34.37

The sprint relay team of Job Mason, Steven McKendr ick, Kasey Corcoran and Josh Ware finished eighth with a time of 44.21.

McKendrick also qualified in the long jump and 400 meters. He finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 3.25 inches. He was fourth in the 400 with a time of 52.32.
