There’s a new venue this year, but the same reason to raise money–finding a cure for cancer. The annual Relay For Life of Milam County is set for 6 p.m. Friday at the Cameron Junior High track, located on 22nd Street.

The all-night, family-friendly, fundraising event had been in Rockdale for several years, but in an effort to make it a true all-county venture, this year’s Relay was moved to Cameron.

“We wanted more of a county-based Relay and to get Cameron more involved we moved it there,” event chair Kim Jeter said. The plan is to move the venue site around the county each year.

Relay For Lifeisa a unique fundr a i si ng e vent that allows participants from all walks of life—including patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, faith-based groups and communit y volunteers— to join together to fight cancer.

Relay is the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) signature activity and it offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate. Teams of people will camp out at the track complex and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 12-hour event.

In the past eight years the event held has raised over $392,000 for cancer research, education, advocacy and service.

Jeter said 15 to 20 teams are expected at the event.

Survivors lap— Opening ceremonies will get under way at 6 p.m. with a cancer survivors’ lap at 6:30 p.m. The luminaria ceremony is set from 9 to 10 p.m.

JoLeen Eiklenborg of Waco will lead the Fight Back ceremony at 12 a. m. Saturday. Awards, closing ceremonies and a church service will start at 5 a.m., Jeter said.

Other activities: Silent auction, 7 p.m. to midnight; Ballet Folkloriko de Cameron dance group, 8 p.m.; entertainment by Eric Landeros, 10 p.m.; “Miss-ter Relay” contest, 1 a.m.

Through the night the teams will have different activities to keep the kids and other team members busy, Jeter said.

Luminarias—Luminarias and commemorative angels will be on sale at the track from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

“Luminarias line the inside of the track and angels line the outside,” Jeter said. Luminaries and angels can also be purchased until noon Friday at The Rockdale Reporter.
