Milano duo aiming for field event medals

Garza, Sanders first Eagles to make state since Evans in 2004


Garza Garza Milano will send two tracksters to the meet in Austin in junior Brandon Garza and senior Thomas Sanders.

Both will compete Friday at Mike Myers Stadium.

Garza will compete in the Class A boys pole vault at 9 a.m. Friday. He was the Region IV champion with a last chance vault of 13-feet, a career best height.

His height is the seventh best qualifying in the field of nine vaulters, the best is from Brandon Gill of Clyde Eula at 14 feet 3 inches.

Holland’s Blair Severson, who had been in Milano’s track district and region until last year’s UIL re-alignment, also qualified in the event out of Region II with a height of 14-0, as did two other Class A competitors.

Sanders will compete in the Class A boys long jump at noon. He qualified in the event after finishing second at the Region IV track meet with a person best jump of 21 feet 8.75 inches.

He missed out at state in 2010 in the triple jump where he was third by just three and a half inches.


Sanders Sanders The top qualifying jump in the Class A boys long jump comes from Johnny Gaines of Clarendon with a leap of 23 feet 1 inch. Sanders jump is seventh best in the field of nine.

The last Milano boy to qualify for state was Joseph Evans in the pole vault in 2004.

The last Milano boy to earn a medal at the state meet is believed to be Corey Watkins in 1996 in the Class A 400 meters.
