A SIGN OF THE TIMES—

United Steelworkers (USW) Local 4895 Union Hall at 1529 West Cameron (US 79) is for sale, yet another visible sign of the loss of Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations smelter. While about 400 Local 4895 members remain on a recall list for a possible future re-start, the local’s membership has dwindled to around 44 employees of the atomizer. For decades the local listed more then 1,000 members on it rolls. The union hall was built in 1972 and sits on a two-acre lot. USW Local 4895 continues to hold events. A picnic for active, laid off retired members is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at The Ranch.
