Double digit decline for Rockdale

Milam check 15% less than May 2010

AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced last week the state’s sales revenue in April was $1.87 billion, up 11.4 percent compared to April 2010. In Milam County though, things are not looking so bright.

The City of Rockdale, along with the rest of the towns in Milam County are down in rebate money compared to the amounts received in May 2010.

Rockdale’s rebate check for May 2011 was down 23.5 percent compared to their check in the same time last year. Rockdale received $66,407 this month, while the check for May 2010 was $86,885.

The city is down 15.6 percent for the year.

Milam County’s check was $89,271 for May, down 15 percent compared to the same time in 2010. The county’s total for the year, $416,173 is down just over eight percent compared to 2010.

Sales tax allocations to local governments represent March sales reported by monthly tax filers and January, February and March sales reported by quarterly tax filers.

“ This is the 13th straight month in which state sales tax revenue has increased,” Combs said. “Business spending in sectors such as the oil and gas industry helped boost sales tax collection. Tax revenue from retail spending also showed growth.”

For May 2011, $600.1 million in local sales tax allocations went out to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts. That is a 7.1 percent increase from May 2010.

Combs sent out May sales tax allocations of $403.4 million to Texas cities, up 4.7 percent compared to May 2010. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax allocations are running 6.2 percent higher than last year.

Texas counties will receive sales tax payments of $37.4 million, up 11 percent compared to one year ago. Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 12.6 percent higher than last year.

Also, 174 special purpose taxing districts are getting $25.6 million in sales tax, up 12.6 percent.compared to last May.
