Reporter/Marie Bakken AUSTIN—A pair of Milano Eagles tried to keep their regional meet success going and attempted to rewrite the school history books at the Class A state track meet Friday at Mike Myers Stadium.

Thomas Sanders placed fifth in the long jump by soaring 21-5.5 on his second leap of the day.

He had qualified for the state meet after a career-best 21-8.75 at the regiona meet.

Christopher Stephens of Buena Vista grabbed gold with a 22-3.5 leap.

Sanders’ teammate junior Brandon Garza cleared 12-6 to finish eighth in the Class A pole vault.

Garza’s career best came two weeks ago as a regional champion at 13-0.

Blair Severson of Holland was the clear winner with a vault of 15- 6 to successfully defend his state crown.

The last Milano boy to qualify for state was Joseph Evans in the pole vault in 2004.

The last Milano boy to earn a medal at the state meet is believed to be Corey Watkins in 1996 in the Class A 400 meters.
