West named Precinct 2 Constable by commissioners
CAMERON—A very familiar face is back in Milam County law enforcement.
County commissioners on Monday unanimously appointed former Sheriff Charlie West to the Precinct 2 Constable vacancy created by the resignation of Heith Kemper.
West was Milam sheriff for 13 years and was a deputy for 18 years prior to accepting the sheriff position. Full Story

Burn ban goes away for a week
The rural outdoor burning ban in Milam County has been lifted for one week by County Judge Dave Barkemeyer.
Barkemeyer told Milam Count y commissioners on Monday that the ban has been temporarily lifted and will be reimposed at 12-noon Wednesday, June 1. Full Story

TxDoT chooses ‘restore’ option for landmark
It appears the nearly- century old Worley Bridge will remain serving County Road 428 motorists well into another century.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has chosen an option to restore the now-closed bridge, rather than build a new one at another location, a choice endorsed Monday by the Milam County commissioners court. Full Story

Lots of end-of-school activities
Gause Baptist Church will host an “Out of School Bash” on Tuesday, May 31 for all ages at Adamson Lagoon in College Station. They will meet at the church and leave from there at 6:45 p.m. The church will be taking a bus. It is required that if you have a child of age up to third grade wanting to attend that you plan to attend with them. Full Story

After a year off, Tigers back in the pack
After being uanble to find a coach and being forced to miss the 2010 season, Rockdale will field a 7-on-7 squad this summer.
Former Tiger standout and local businessman Greg Brinkley will guide the team this year.
Brinkley’s son Ethan was the starting quarterback for the Tigers last season. Full Story
Killebrew left a bigger legacy than just smacking homers
While I wasn’t any particular Minnesota Twins fan when I was a kid (Read: St. Louis Cardinals), Harmon Killebrew was just one of those guys that was easy to admire and like.
While not a World Series regular, the Twins had some copious talent in Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Bert Blyleven and Rod Carew.
Killebrew, Blyleven and Carew are in the Hall of Fame. Full Story

Mart mashes Milano in deciding game of regional quarterfinals

Milano’s historic run in the state playoffs came to an end Saturday, losing a decided game three 10-1 against the Mart Panthers and their ace pitcher Holden Strunck in the Region IV quarterfinals. Full Story
Jobless rate under 10 percent in Milam
Milam rate lowest since January 2009
Unemployment numbers show Milam County down slightly for the month at 9.6 percent for April 2011, according to reports released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). It is the county’s lowest jobless rate since 8.8 percent in December 2008. At that time it was the highest since the mid- 1980s. Full Story

The Lumina nt C ommunity Advisory Panel (LCAP) held its spring meeting at the Three Oaks Mine office in Lexington. The main topics were a review of Luminant’s use of water for mining purposes and a presentation by Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District. Full Story
