Alcoa arrives (and leaves); family eyes second century
POSTMASTER—John Esten Cooke was appointed Rockdale Postmaster in 1936 and he oversaw construction of Rockdale’s new post office in 1939. He died the next year.
W. H. Cooke became publisher editor in 1936 when his father became postmaster. It was a particularly hard time in Rockdale, as it was elsewhere in Depression-Era America. Full Story
SFC Evans due back from Afghanistan
AFGHANISTAN– Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ernest L. Evans Sr., son of Peggy A. Evans and Earnest W. Russell and grandson of Rose Marie Russell, all of Rockdale, is set to return home t h is week f rom a 12- mont h deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Community theater auditions this week
Milam Community Theater will hold auditions for the musical “Camelot” 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 31 and June 1, at the Performing Arts Center on the C.H. Yoe High School Campus in Cameron.
Cameron’s award- w inning director San Lorenz will lead the theater’s efforts to produce one of America’s most beloved musicals on a local stage. Full Story
