SFC Evans due back from Afghanistan


SFC Ernest L. Evans, Sr. SFC Ernest L. Evans, Sr. AFGHANISTAN– Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ernest L. Evans Sr., son of Peggy A. Evans and Earnest W. Russell and grandson of Rose Marie Russell, all of Rockdale, is set to return home t h is week f rom a 12- mont h deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His new duty station will be Fort Bliss.

Evans entered the U.S. Army on June 10, 1998 and completed Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis Virginia as an UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter Maintainer and attended Basic Airborne Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

His aviation assignments include D (AMC) 82nd Aviation Maintenance Company 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC; 2nd- 82nd Avn Bde 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC; 1-228th Joint Task Force Bravo, Soto Cano Airbase, Honduras; 1st Staff and Faculty, Ft. Eustis, VA; A Co 3-2 GSAB USAG Humphries, Korea and currently in Charlie Company 3rd Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade stationed out of Ft. Hood.

SFC Evans’s military education includes Advanced Individual Training, Primary Leadership Course, ANCOC (Honor Graduate), BNCOC , PLDC, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Militar y Instructor Training Course, Military Cadre Course, Small Group Leader Training Course and Airborne School.

His awards and decorations include the Air Medal (3), Army Commendation Medal (6OLC), Army Achievement Medal (6OLC), Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal (4), National Defense Service Medal, Army Expeditionary Force Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2), NCO Professional Ribbon ( 3), Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO medal (2nd award), Combat Action Badge (2), Senior Aviation Wings, and Jump Wings.

SFC Evans has served in assignments as squad leader, technical inspector, platoon sergeant, BNCOC small group leader, service school instructor and company first sergeant. He is currently assigned as the first sergeant (1SG) to Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC) 3rd Battalion 4th Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade.

Evans’ return from Afghanistan this week is a surprise to his Rockdale family.
