11 new members in 2011 class will join Hall of Honor
On the 35th anniversary of the title, six players and the entire coaching staff will be honored with induction ceremonies held October 28 in conjunction with the Rockdale-Giddings football game.
Each member of the team will also be recognized at the ceremony.
Individually, Randy J. Morgan, Robert Luetge, Don Wesley, Jackie Thompson, Kerry Locklin and James “Tuck” Russell were elected to the Hall of Honor.
Head coach Fred Johnson and assistants Lew Simmonds and Dick Weigand will also be inducted.
Morgan, a middle linebacker and team captain, was a firstteam all-state selection after leading the Tigers to the state title. He was also a baseball standout.
Luetge, Wesley, Thompson and Russell reaped the rewards of playing on a title team and were named second team all-state.
The speedster was also a member of the Tigers’ state champion sprint relay team that propelled Rockdale to the championship. The timing in that race is still the school record, 34 years after the fact.
He also pocketed a bronze medal in the 100-yard dash.
Wesley passed away in 2001 at the age of 42 from lung cancer.
Locklin, who missed almost half of the championship season with a broken leg, was named first-team all-state the following year as a linebacker.
Luetge and Locklin will give the Hall its third and fourth set of father-son entries. The twosome’s fathers, Clyde Luetge and Billy Ray Locklin, were in the inaugural class in 2007.
Luetge was a two-way starter on the title team as well as the punter and also took a bronze medal in the pole vault at the state meet.
Theresa White, a 1978 RHS graduate and former coach, will also be included in the prestigious group.
Mike Korth, a Tiger trainer in the early 80s, will receive an honorary membership.
