Summer squad earns last chance by finishing second at Navasota

In the last tournament of the summer, in the last game of the tournament, the Rockdale 7-on-7 team finally qualified for the state tournament by clipping Cameron 40-27 at Rattler Field.

The Tigers had no other tournaments on the schedule this summer, so this was absolutely their last chance.

Cameron made it to the finals a year ago and has not yet qualified for the state tournament.

The Tigers also tamed Bellville 27-20, before falling to host Navasota 33-26 in overtime and Lexington 41-35.

They lost a coin flip with Navasota for first place.

In the 13-year history of the 7- on- 7 competition, Rockdale has made four straight trips to the state tournament (they did not field a team in 2010) and five overall since 2005.

The 7-on-7 state tournament consists of 64 teams from throughout the state and earn a trip to state through 31 qualifying tournaments held at various high school sites in June and July.

There are two divisions: I (Class 4A-5A) and II (Class 1A-3A).

State is held July 14-15 in College Station at Penberthy Fields on the campus of Texas A& M University.

Championship games are played at Kyle Field.

Navasota 33, Rockdale 26 ( OT ) —Touchdow ns: Brook s, Gibbs 2, Nick Gonzales. Extra points: Austin Caffey and Gibbs. Interceptions: Brooks and Wright 2. Quarterback: Brinkley.

Lexington 41, Rockdale 35. Touchdowns: Caffey 2, Wright 2, David. Extra points: Caffey, David and Ramey. Interceptions: Gonzales. Quarterbacks: Gibbs and Brinkley.

7-ON-7 STATE TOURNEY

What—7-on-7 State Tournament, Division II (1A-3A) When—Thursday-Friday, July 14- 15. Pool play begins Thursday at 1 p.m. The top two teams from each four-team pool will advance to the championship round on Friday.
