Reporter earns honors in annual TPA contest

ROCKWALL—Two second places and t wo four th place awards were given to The Rockdale Reporter in the Texas Press Association’s annual Texas Better Newspaper Contest. Winners were announced Saturday at the 132nd annual summer Convention at the Hilton Bella Harbor.

The Reporter competed in the large weeklies division, earning second place for editor Mike Brown’s editorials and routine special sections for “The Gridiron” 2010 football edition.

Brown’s editorials on city government and getting out to vote was praised by the judges, “I really like the conversational writing style in both of these. Nicely done.”

In the routine special sections category, judges comments included, “Great pics. Fun idea... Like the breakdown of schedule/ roster/stats. Nice idea to include team records.”

The paper also earned fourth place in page design and sports coverage.

Judges commented on page design, “Creative layouts, especially the sports page make this paper unique.”
