Local 4-H kids shine at state

Over $2 million handed out in scholarship money

COLLEGE STATION—Eleven Milam County 4-H students competed at the State 4-H Roundup Activities at Texas A&M University June 13 - 16.

The week started off with the presentation of 2 million dollars in scholarships to 200 4-Hers across the state of Texas.

The four Milam County 4-Hers who received scholarship were:

• Elaine Luckey of Rockdale received $16,000 from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

• Sterling Faulkner, Rockdale 4-H student, received $ 2,500 from Producers’ Cooperative Association;

• Evan McCoy of Rockdale received $1,000 from Nueces Power Equipment and $1,000 from San A ntonio Livestock Exposition Rural Youth Committee.

• Jarrett Beckhusen of Cameron received $10,000 from the Wallrath Educational Foundation.


The third place winners in Range and Pasture Grass Identification at the state 4-H meet in College Station were (L to R)—Hailee Fisher, Madeline Kostroun, Devin Fisher and Karl Woelfel. William Dean, a Rockdale 4- Her, placed 3rd with his Shooting Sports educational presentation.

In the R ange and Pasture Grass Identification Contest, the team of Devin Fisher, Hailee Fisher, Madeline Kostroun and Karl Woelfel placed 3rd.

Devin also received a 5th place High Point Individual award.

Koustron is a Cameron 4-Her while Fisher, Fisher and Woelfel are Thorndale 4-Hers.

Others participating in the State 4-H Roundup included: Nutr ition Quiz Bowl team— Elaine Luckey, Evan McCoy, Natasha Ramthun and Phillip Rasco; Soil Judging—Natasha Ramthun.

Ramthum is a Cameron 4-Her and Rasco is from Gause.

Congratulations to all of the 4- Hers and thanks to the coaches, leaders, and parents that worked to prepare the 4-Hers.

Summer 4-H Opportunities

Sign-up for one or more of the Summer 4-H Opportunities. Experience a new 4-H project or learn more about a current project.

Consumer Workshop

If you are wanting to learn more about the Consumer and Clothing projects or you need to improve your knowledge on the projects, sign-up for the workshop on June 29 at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Cameron.

The workshop will start at 9:30 a.m. and end about 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. The workshop is open to all 4-Hers and leaders.

During the workshop 4-Hers and leaders will get practice in sharpening their buying skills for the Consumer Decision Making Contest.

Participants will also complete a Herb Dream Bag to take home along with gaining basic knowledge on the Clothing project.

Food & Nutrition Workshop

If you are interested in the Food and Nutrition project, signup for the July 6th workshop at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Cameron.

The program will start at 9:30 a.m. and end about 3:00 p.m.

You will have a day full of eating, cooking and learning about project activities and contests. As a part of the workshop, you will cook lunch as well as be a part of a food challenge.

New and experienced 4-Hers will all gain skills to help them in project activities and with personal eating habits. Attend the workshop and learn as you eat.

2011 Rockdale Fair Tags

Ownership and Tag-in dates are as follows:

July 9—Lambs, Swine & Goats tag-in will be at Rockdale Fair Park from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m.

September 14 —Rabbits tag-in w ill be at Home Demonstration Building from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Entries for the Market Show will be due at each individual tag-in or pick-up at a cost of $15 per entry.

Major Show Tag Change

If you ordered major show tags for steer, lamb, goat or swine, tag-in date has been changed to Tuesday, June 28 at Arledge Feed Lot, Hwy 79 W. of Rockdale. Major steer tag- in w ill start at 7 a.m. followed by lamb, goat and swine tag-in. If you have questions, contact Milam County Extension Office at 254- 697-7045.
