The July Fourth holiday is going to be red, white and quiet in Milam County.
Except for Friday night in Rockdale.
County commissioners, on a 3-2 vote Monday, banned the sale and use of all fireworks within the county, except for Friday’s display at Fair Park, sponsored by Citizens National Bank. Full Story

Atomizer ‘shopped’ but no sale
Smelter status remains ‘temporarily curtailed’
Alcoa “shopped around” for a buyer for its Rockdale Operations atomizer this year but decided against selling the facility.
Jim Hodson, spokesman for the company, which closed its smelter at Rockdale Operations in 2008-09, said Alcoa made a “strategic decision” to keep the atomizer, which remains open. Full Story

Candidates designate treasurers five months before filing starts
If the early bird gets the worm, at least two prospective Milam County 2012 candidates are hoping it also gets the votes.
It’s only June but incumbent sheriff David Greene and potential Republican Primary challenger Greg Kouba have already designated campaign treasurers, according to Sherry Mueck, county elections clerk. Full Story
Milano MS event raises $10,782 on Saturday
MILANO–For the second year in a row, a small fund-raiser has turned in big money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Saturday, the second annual Kristi’s Krusaders “Rally for the Walk...Walk MS 2011” event at Nat’s raised $10,782. Full Story
July Fourth holiday set for Monday
Monday is the Fourth of July and most businesses will be closed including The Rockdale Reporter and financial institutions.
City Hall will be closed and there will be no garbage pickup. Trash collection will be one day late the rest of the week. Full Story
