Student Council to hold fundraisers this weekend

Rockdale High School’s student council will hold a bake sale at 8 a.m. Friday, July 15 in front of Rockdale Super Walmart, according to Caroline Wilde, spokesperson.

They will also hold a “donation” carwash 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at O’Reilly Auto Parts.

The RHS student council officers will be going to a leadership camp at the end of July and are looking for donations to help with the costs.

“Every donation helps and is greatly appreciated,” said Wilde. “Thank you for your help with these parent-sponsored fundraisers.”

Area residents named to SFA spring Dean’s list

NACODOCHES–Four local residents have been named to the spring 2011 semester Dean’s List at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Area students listed were: Jordan Rene’ LaCaille and Sylvia Torres, both of Thorndale, and Brittany Lea Brinkman and Catie Lynn Homeyer, both of Caldwell.

To be named to the SFA Dean’s List a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a grade-point average of 3.5.

Credit-by-exam dates set for Rockdale ISD

Rockdale ISD, in compliance with Texas Education Agency requirements and RISD Board Policy EEJB, has established policies and procedures for credit-byexam for acceleration in grades K-12. Students and/or parents who want to consider an accelerated progression through school should visit with the campus principal or counselor, according to Lynnette L. Guerra, RISD Testing Coordinator.

On all campuses, specific criteria must be met. Students must achieve a certain score(s) on a criterion-referenced exam(s). In addition, the student’s parent or guardian must give written approval of the proposed acceleration and the campus principal must also concur, Guerra said.

In grades K-5, the student must score 90 percent or above on a criterion-referenced test for the grade level to be skipped in each of the following areas: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

In grades 6-12, the student can receive credit for an academic subject in which the student has received no prior instruction if the student scores 90 percent or above on a criterion-referenced examination for acceleration. Students scoring 90 percent or better will receive that examination score as the course grade on the academic record.

Guerra said test dates for the 2011-12 school year have been scheduled as follows: Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1, 2011 and May 1, 2 and 3, 2012. Since the exams may be ordered from outside sources, the deadline to request testing for fall 2011 is Aug. 1 and spring 2012 is April 2. Campus principals and counselors have the forms required for submitting a request for credit-by-exam for acceleration. Please consult the principals or counselors for more information on this subject.
