Commissioners may balk at ‘road crew’ plan

County Judge Dave Barkemeyer may propose creating a fifth road & bridge fund to facilitate paving in the 2011 county budget but don’t look for it to be smooth sailing through the commissioners court.

“I don’t think it’s going to fly with the four commissioners,” Dale Jaecks, Precinct 3 commissioner and the senior member of the court, told The Reporter this week.

In his weekly column distributed to area media last week, Barkemeyer proposed an R&B fund in addition to those earmarked for the four precincts.

It would create a “capital road crew” to devote full time to preparing and paving county roads, except in emergencies.

Jaecks said he believes the other commissioners feel the same way he does. “I don’t think we’re going to vote to cut that funding from the four precincts.”

The commissioners and county judge each have one vote in commissioners court.

Barkemeyer envisioned the commissioners court would set the priorities for the proposed new crew and the commissioner in whose precinct it is working would be responsible for the crew and project.

Budget preparation is under way. Commissioners are to give their input in August before the county judge files the document Aug. 12

Budget adoption is set for the Sept. 12 commissioners court session.

Barkemeyer has indicated he does not foresee an increase in the county tax rate in 2011.
