District to appeal high school rating as clerical coding error
Rockdale High School and Rockdale Junior-High School will be rated “unacceptable” when the annual Texas Education Agency “report cards” are released later this week.
It’s the first unacceptable rating in six years for an RISD campus and the first time ever that two campuses have failed to meet the annual standards. Full Story

Two teens indicted for capital murder
Prosecutor mulling death penalty option
Two Rockdale-area teens were indicted for capital murder Thursday by a Milam County Grand Jury, a procedure which could lead to a death penalty trial.
Prosecutor Kerry Spears said she has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty in the cases of 19-year- old Brandon Charles Cotton and Tanner Aaron Baker, 18. Full Story

With the recent cancellation of its regular season schedule, Rockdale coach Jeff Miller is spending a great deal of his time at the THSCA coaching school in Fort Worth, trying to replace Austin Eastside Memorial as the Tigers opening day opponent.

Jobless rate jumps back above 10 percent
U.S., Texas rates rise slightly; neighboring counties also see increase
Unemployment numbers across the state are looking better, but that is not the case for Milam County, according to reports released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
Jobless numbers rose a full point for the month, up to 10.8 percent. The rate is up half a point from the same time in 2010 where 10.3 percent of county residents were unemployed. Full Story
Last week of an 11 year journey
This is my last week at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce. I leave with excitement on the new venture and a sadness because I will miss this place. I will miss the people who call because they know the Chamber is the place with all of the answers. We are definitely the “go-to” place and people recognize that and depend on us to have those answers. Full Story
