Doing the Lord’s work

You hear pastors talk about “building a church” but some, like Rev. Royal Johnson of Rockdale’s Rising Star Baptist Church, mean it literally. He’s one of many in the congregation who are donating their skills, and more than a little perspiration, to build a new 9,000- square-foot sanctuary at the north end of Texas Street. The church is being built by the congregation without using a general contractor. The slab was poured in July, 2009, and Rev. Johnson said target completion date is September, 2012. Rising Star will host its annual Gospel Explosion fund raiser at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in the junior-high commons featuring its choir, soloists, praise dancers, mime dancers and more. Admission will be $10 pre-sale or at the door with children 10 and under admitted free. See also Faith page, 4C.
