Texas State fair entries due Aug. 15

Deadlines are as follows for these two shows: Aug. 15—State Fair of Texas entries must be turned in to the extension office by 5 p.m. This includes all livestock, speaking contest and judging contests. If you have any questions regarding State Fair entries, please call the extension office. Entry forms are available at the extension office, or by visiting the State Fair website.

Sept. 5—Heart of Texas entries must be turned in to the extension office by 5 p.m. If you have any questions, contact the extension office. Entry forms are available from the extension office or by visiting the Heart of Texas website.

H.O.T. SCRAMBLE—If you are interested in participating in the Heart of Texas Calf Scramble, you need to contact the Extension office by Monday, Aug. 1 to schedule a parent and exhibitor meeting prior to entry into the scramble. All Heart of Texas entries are due to our office by Sept. 5.

SPRING MAJOR LAMB/ GOAT TAGS—Anyone interested in showing lambs or goats at any of the spring major livestock shows, such as Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston or Star of Texas in Austin, should order tags by Aug. 26. Tags will be $12 each and should be ordered at the Milam County Extension Office. Payment must be made at the time tags are ordered.

You must also order major show lamb/goat tags to validate does to be shown in the Texas Stars Doe Show in San Angelo.

Further, if you intend to show breeding sheep, you will need to let us know how many sheep you will be validating. They will not be tagged, but validation must be ordered by Aug. 26. Cost per breeding sheep will be $6 per head. If you validated lambs or goats for State Fair of Texas, you must revalidate those animals for spring majors in order to show them at the spring major shows.

ROCKDALE FAIR—Important ownership and tag-in dates for the 2011 Fair are as follows:

Sept. 14—Rabbits tag-in will be at Home Demonstration Building from 5-7 p.m.

Entries for the Market Show will be due at each individual tag-in or pick-up at a cost of a $15 fee per entry.

DRAWINGS WANTED– Each year the 4-H Calendar and Handbook showcases drawings by Milam County 4-Hers. The drawing can illustrate this year’s slogan “Milam County 4-H: Green and Growing” by Jacob Pedroza or any 4-H experience. Submit your drawing on plain white paper (8 1/2 x 11). Pencil or colored pictures will be accepted, but remember that most pictures are printed in black and white for the calendar, so make sure your picture will copy.

Submit your drawings for the “2011-12 Milam County 4-H Calendar Handbook” by Sept. 15 at the Milam County Extension Office. The calendar handbook will be published and distributed on Oct. 2 at our Celebration Event. The first, second and third place drawings will receive money prizes at the Celebration. You can submit multiple drawings, so get busy and start drawing.

RAFFLE—Members are selling raffle tickets for their annual fund-raiser. There are lots of great gift certificates and prizes. The money raised by the raffle tickets assists 4-Hers and leaders as they participate in district and state activities as well as helping pay for 4-H opportunities offered in the county program.

The 4-H club that sells the most tickets will have their representatives named the Mr. and Miss 4-H, while the club with the second highest ticket sales will have their representatives named the 4-H Prince and Princess. Buy your tickets from any 4-Her or at the Milam County Extension Office. Tickets are $5 apiece or five tickets for $20.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
