Milam pecan growers place at state show
Milam County pecan growers had a strong showing at this years State Pecan Show. This event is the culmination of local and regional pecan shows to evaluate the best pecan in each division from across the state.
Seventeen pecan samples from six Milam County producers advanced to the State Show. Among the entries, ten placed in the top three. Results are as follows:
Frank Klecka Jr. placed first with his Choctaw and Kiowa. He also placed second with an Oconee and third with a Wichita. Robert Schuetze placed first with his Desirable and first with his State Champion Native (a class for native pecans which have won State Champion previously).
Bently Hause received first place on his Success pecans. Barton Felton was awarded second place for his Kiowa and third for his Brake variety. Janell Felton’s native pecan sample was awarded Reserve Champion Native.
Henry Purvis also had a sample advance from regional and competed well against a very full Comanche category.
For producers and homeowners alike, the Milam County Pecan Show will be held in November and is the first step to having pecans graded and advance.
