Boynton, Wilde nab singles titles in ‘hot’ Open

Youth winners also crowned in brutal heat

Reporter/Bill Martin Devin Boynton of Round Rock and Annie Wilde of Rockdale are the men’s and women’s singles champions from the 2011 Rockdale Open unreeled over the weekend at Veterans Memorial Park.

Boynton, a quicksilver retriever, f lashed incredible speed in winning the men’s final over Ken Esten Cooke, Rockdale native, now of Victoria, 7-6, 6-3.

Wilde, a 2010 RHS graduate and Baylor University student, won a round-robin to claim the women’s crown.

Mark Schroeder and Kelly Cmerek of Taylor won a threeset thriller for the men’s doubles crown over Chris Widmer and Xavier Rodriguez of Taylor and Round Rock 4-6, 7-6 (11-9).


ROCKDALE OPEN ROCKDALE OPEN Anna Maldonado of Rockdale and Monee Michna of Taylor won the women’s doubles title with a 2-0 record in a three-team round-robin. Sarah Warner and Ginny Flores were runners-up with a 1-1 record.

The mother-son team of Betty and Matt Malish of Thrall won the mixed doubles championship, defeating Annie Wilde and Bobby Baggerly of Rockdale in the finals 6-3, 2-6 (10-6).

HEAT INDEX 111—The tourney was played in 105- degree temperatures with the heat index hitting 111 degrees, verifying the tournament’s motto, “Tennis at its Hottest.”

As a concession to the heat, all split-set matches were decided by 10-point tiebreakers rather than full third sets, said Bob Wilson, adult tourney director. “ That was a logical move,” he said, “because we had a lot of split-set matches.”

Reporter/Bill Cooke YOU TH TOU R NEY— Fifty seven matches, all unreeled Wednesday and Thursday in torrid heat on city and school courts, determined the youth winners in the 2011 Rockdale Open Tennis Tournament.

Kyle Peck of Hutto won the 18 boys singles title, defeating Trevor Gage of Milano in a 6-4, 6-4 thriller final.

Tourney director Lee “Sparky” Thomason said the match of the tourney occurred in the 18 boys singles semifinals when Gage outlasted Jacob Crump of Rockdale 6-3, 2- 6, 11- 9. That match pitted two UIL regional qualifiers.

Jeffrey Watts of Georgetown won the 14 boys singles title, defeating Tiernan Avrett of The Woodlands, a 12-year- old who played “up” in age bracket and made it to the finals before losing 6-2, 6-1.

The Rockdale open, labeled “ Tennis at its Hottest,” is an annual July event and was played in brutal temperatures. As a concession, a 10-point tiebreaker was used to decide splitset matches, rather than playing a full third set, Thomason said.
