Reporter/Bill Martin The Tigers faced Abilene Wylie in the 7-on-7 state tournament. Reporter/Bill Martin While there was some doubt whether Rockdale was actually going to play on opening day, the Tigers have secured an opponent for zero week.

Athletic Director Jeff Miller has penciled in Abilene Wylie for the first game of the year, but the game will be played on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Tiger Field at 6 p.m., rather than the traditional Friday night.

The Tigers were scheduled to play Eastside Memorial at House Park in Austin on Aug. 26, but it was revealed last week that Eastside will not play a varsity schedule this fall, but will face junior varsity squads instead.

Eastside, which is classified as a Class 4A school, currently has 19 players in its football program and only one is a senior.

Miller had also been in contact with 4A Austin McCallum and the new Class 5A Round Rock Cedar Ridge High school as possible replacements for Eastside.

The replacement game gives Rockdale five home games this season.

Wylie, picked third in District 5-3A, was available because it did not have an opponent in zero week.

The Bulldogs were 5-7 a year ago and are lead by Hugh Sandifer who has been at the school for 25 seasons and has guided them to 216 wins.

Wylie agreed to the matchup with the Tigers after persuasion from Coach Miller. The two teams will also split the gate.
