Area rebates bring some light

Rebates down 14.5 percent for Rockdale in 2011

AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has announced that state sales revenue in July was $1.86 billion, up 10.3 percent compared to July 2010.

Those numbers still don’t bring rebates back into the positive for most area entities. Rockdale is down for the month and year. Whereas Milam County is up for the month, but down compared to August 2010.

Rockdale’s rebate check for August 2011 was $65,680 this month, compared to $71,105 in August 2010.

The city is down 14.5 percent for the year and has received $420,647 in 2011.

On a brighter note, Milam County’s check was $97,769 for August, up 7.1 percent compared to $91,217 for the same time in 2010.

However, the county’s total for the year, $664,051 is down 7.7 percent compared to August 2010.

The sales tax figures represent June sales reported by monthly tax filers and April, May and June sales reported by quarterly filers.

STATEWIDE—“ This marks the 16th consecutive month of increased state sales tax revenue,” Combs said. “The strong growth was again primarily in business spending in areas such as the oil and gas sector and manufacturing. Sales tax revenue from restaurants also showed gains.”

Combs sent August sales tax allocations totaling $606.7 million to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts, up 9.1 percent compared to August 2010, according to the Comptroller’s office.

Texas cities received $406.8 million, up 8.4 percent compared to August 2010. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 6.6 percent compared to the same time period last year.

Texas counties were sent sales tax payments of $37.6 million, up 11.6 percent compared to last August. So far this year, sales tax allocations to counties are running 12.3 percent ahead of this point in 2010.

Combs also sent $27.1 million to special purpose taxing districts, up 15.3 percent compared to August a year ago.
