A 5,500-lb. bronze rhinoceros sculpture came through Milam County Thursday, Aug. 18, on its way to Jewett to be put on display for a year at the 2011-12 Leon County Art Trail Show. Artist Julio Sanchez De Alba had his rhinoceros, “Strength,” on display in front of the Georgetown Library when Terry Jones, coordinator for the event, invited De Alba, an artist from El Paso, to enter the show. Jones loaded “Strength” with a large forklift and transported it to Jewett. Sculptor De Alba’s rhinoceros will be one of 23 pieced placed along Hwy. 79 in Jewett. All the sculptures are scheduled to be in place by the end of September.
