Split vote makes trash pickup once per week
Council members clash over change, ‘call list’
Rockdale residents will lose one of their two weekly trash pickup days after a divided city council ended a lively discussion with a 4-2 vote Monday.
The council voted to direct City Manager Kelvin Knauf to negotiate with IESI for once-a-week service beginning about Jan. 1.
Currently, Waste Management provides twice-a-week service to Rockdale. Full Story

The mercury at the U. S. Weather Service thermometer at KRXT-FM climbed to 112 on Sunday afternoon, the secondhighest temperature ever recorded in the 86-plus years the Weather Service has staffed a Rockdale observing station. Full Story

Suicide prevention meetings ahead
The Milam County Suicide Prevention Council will hold two ASK Gatekeeper Training sessions during the nest week.
The Rockdale High School library will host one meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 and the Cameron High School cafeteria, will host a second session at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8.
Programs will last about two hours. Light refreshments will be served. Full Story

Public access computers are serving community
After a dozen years connecting Rockdale to the information highway, the Greater Rockdale E-Access Team (GREAT) is still going strong.
GREAT provides free public access computers at eight locations around Rockdale. It’s come a long way since its inception in 2000 and is continually updating its technology. Full Story

Eagles ready to shake off the effects of a 1-9 season

Proof positive is the Eagles’ surprising 41- 6 victory over Marlin on the road in the season opener last week.

Furniture store closing Rockdale branch after more than a quarter-century
Main Street in Rockdale will seem a little emptier after this week. Orsag’s is closing its store on Main Street after 26 years in business. The furniture and appliance store officially locked the front doors on Wednesday (Aug. 31). Full Story

Rockdale’s newest business is Snap Fitness, a 24- hour, seven-day per week fitness center, which held its ribbon cutting Saturday morning in the former Comfort AC location, 734 West Cameron. Full Story
City-wide garage sale Saturday
It’s that time again to empty your trunks and put gas in the car. It is city wide garage sale time.
The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce will host its annual City Wide Garage Sale on Saturday, Sept. 3, Chamber president Deedra Jacob announced.
This year the Chamber decided to host this event free of charge to any citizen that wished to sign up. Full Story
