Fund-raiser garage sale Saturday at St. Joseph’s

A fund-raiser garage sale is set for 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 234 San Gabriel Street, in Rockdale.

Various items will be for sale, including breakfast tacos, tamales, sausage wraps and desserts.

Special series ahead at Landmark Baptist

In honor of the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Version of the Bible, Dr. David E. Gonnella, pastor of Landmark Baptist Church, Rockdale, will deliver a special series of lectures in September.

The series will deal with such subjects as the inspiration and preservation of the Biblical text, the history of the two lines of Biblical manuscripts, the superiority of the King James translators to that of any other translation committee, and the King James Version’s fidelity to the Majority Text.

A special feature of the series will be a comparison of eight Bible versions in a dozen key New Testament passages illustrating the danger and doctrinal error in newer translations.

The four-part series, titled “ Which Bible is the Word of God?” will be delivered at 6 p.m. each Sunday in September. Landmark Baptist Church is located on South Wilcox Street next to Manor Oaks Nursing Center. “All are invited,” Dr. Gonnella said.

Allen AME pastor appreciation Sept. 11

Allen AME Church in Rockdale will host a fourth annual appreciation day for Pastor and wife Rev. George W. Morgan Sr. and Dr. Joy Morgan. The ser v ice will be at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Guest speaker will be Elder Herrera and Bishop Shaw from the Rivers of the Living Water of Killeen.

The pubic is invited.

Stephen Chapel AME to honor pastor Sunday

GAUSE—Everyone is invited to help salute pastor Linda M. Wallace and family during their eighth-year appreciation service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 at Stephen Chapel AME Church, 422 E. Hwy 79 in Gause, church clerk Delores Fisher said.

Rev. Mhyrun Hurst of Living Branch Christian Center in Calvert will be guest speaker.

Aglow to welcome Zwicker on Sept. 8

Rockdale Aglow Community Lighthouse will welcome guest speaker Ruth Zwicker at its Thursday, Sept. 8 meeting, Sabrina Thompson, publicist, announced.

The meeting will be held at Rockdale General Store, 1201 W. US 79, with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7.

Zwicker used to ranch in southwest Colorado before being called to minister. She now lives in Comanche and teaches a weekly Lady’s Bible Study and ministers one-on-one to hurting women. She had served as president of Comanche Lighthouse Aglow and is currently serving as vice president of special events for Heart of Texas Aglow.

Rising Star’s 104th anniversary Sept. 18

Rising Star Baptist Church will hold its 104th Church Anniversary and Homecoming on Sunday, Sept. 18, according to Pastor Royal Johnson.

Theme will be “Yesterday-Today- Tomorrow” from Joel 2:28; Acts 2:37. Morning worship will begin at 10 a.m. with guest speaker Rev. Debra Greene from Greater New Birth Baptist Church in Plano.

Evening worship will begin at 3 p.m. with guest speaker Pastor Charles Ray Terry, also from Greater New Birth Baptist Church.

Tuesday sales at Heavenly Treasures

Rockdale Christian Services’ Heavenly Treasures Thrift Store, located on Main Street in Rockdale, will have $3 bags (clothes only) sales each Tuesday during September.

First Assembly of God to show film on Friday

First Assembly of God/Cross the Line will be showing a video about End Times at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 2, according to Pastor Jason Armstrong.

“Food will be provided free after the service and, as always, all ages are welcome,” he said.

Rockdale Aglow to host Bible study sessions

The Rockdale Aglow organization will host a six-session Bible study on “Experiencing Prayer,” spokesperson Sabrina Thompson announced.

Sessions will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Rockdale General Store on Thursdays Sept. 15 and 22, Oct. 6, 20 and 27 and Nov. 3.

Topics will be “In What Postures Do I Pray? ”, “ Why Do Prayers Go Unanswered?”, “How Do You Examine A Word?”, “What are Guidelines to Hearing God’s Voice?”, “What Are Facets of the Holy Spirit?”, “What are Strategies For Spiritual Warfare?” and “How Do I Use Weapons of Warfare?”

Forest Grove church homecoming Sept. 18

Forest Grove Christian Church has set its annual homecoming celebration for Sunday, Sept. 18, pastor Brandon Navarre announced.

“We will be joined by Joel Khopang, our missionary to Thailand, during Sunday School and then Dennis Smith will be preaching during our morning service,” Navarre said.

Next men’s breakfast Sept. 13, Meadowbrook

A free, ecumenical Christian men’s fellowship breakfast is held each second Tuesday from 7 until 8 a.m., rotating between several local churches.

Next breakfast on Tuesday, Sept. 13 will be held at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall.

All men of the Rockdale area are invited.

Former pastor pens second poem collection

AUSTIN—A second collection of poems and prayers written by a former Rockdale First Presbyterian Church pastor, Rev. Patricia Gladney “Trish” Holland, is being published and will be available in September.

The collection is titled “Written on Our Hearts—Meeting Christ in Our Families and Congregations.” Price is $12.

Other titles by Rev. Holland are: “God is Not Nice: Growing Up in Christ in the Bible Belt”, “Swimming in Grace: A Pastor’s Response to Suicide,” and “Faith is a Lumbering Lady: Anticipating the Birth of a Child.”
