Rockdale ISD’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) is still accepting membership applications, please send them back to school with your children. Through the membership dues they are able to build a scholarship fund and purchase educational materials and equipment for the schools.

Reminder that the next PTO meeting will be Monday Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Rockdale Junior High commons area. Child Care will be provided. The PTO’s goal is to foster a caring environment that strives for continued parent involvement. Rockdale PTO always appreciates their parent volunteers, as do our teachers and staff.

GED prep classes

The 2011-12 GED prep classes will begin Monday, Sept. 12 at the Rockdale Junior High School computer lab, according to instructor Shirley Jensen.

New enrollment and orientation is scheduled for the first Monday and Tuesday of each month. Jensen is available 6:15-8:15 p.m. every Monday and Tuesday to assist all GED students. She will also be available at the Rockdale Workforce Center on Wednesdays from 1:30- 4:30 p.m.

Interested candidates may attend any or all of the classes as this program is self paced.

MHS blood drive Monday

Milano High School’s National Honor Society will sponsor a blood drive for the American Red Cross from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12. The drive will be held in the school’s old band hall room.

RJH open house Tuesday

Rockdale Junior High will host an open house from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, principal April Eschberger has announced.

“We will be handing out student progress reports on Tuesday evening. Parents will have the opportunity to meet their students’ teachers and ask questions,” she said.

There will also be a Gifted and Talented parent meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“We encourage each parent to attend and pick up progress reports,” Eschberger said.

Mandatory substitute meeting Sept. 14

A mandatory training for all new Rockdale ISD substitute teachers will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Rockdale Jr. High School conference room.

Individuals interested in becoming substitute teachers must attend this training in order to qualify for the substitute list. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and provide consent to a criminal background check.

Substitute applications can be picked up at the RISD Central Office prior to the training.

TAKS exit level exams

Rockdale High School will offer the TAKS Exit Level Exams in October for Out-of-School (OOS) examinees, district testing coordinator Lynnette L. Guerra announced. Tests dates are Oct. 17 (Social Studies), Oct. 18 (ELA), Oct. 19 (Math) and Oct. 20 (Science).

Individuals who are no longer enrolled in school and who have not previously met minimum expectations on all sections of the TAKS test, but who have met all other graduation requirements, may register to retake the necessary sections(s). All out-of-school TAKS examinees must complete an online registration process.

Out-of-school examinees may register online at http://www.TexasAssessment.com/TAKSoos. Registration needs to be completed by Sept. 16.

All out-of-school TAKS examinees should notify the high school counselors at 512-430- 6140 of their intent to test.

On the day(s) of testing, examinees should arrive at 8 a.m., reporting to the high school office. Examinees must present picture identification, such as a driver’s license, school ID, DPS ID, etc. to test. Examinees will not be able to take the test(s) without a picture ID.

Big Blue Band Boosters

The Rockdale band boosters will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 at the high school band hall, spokesperson Dana Pendleton announced.

Golden Girl Boosters

The RHS Golden Girls booster club will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 in the high school library, spokesperson Melissa Reynosa announced.

All Golden Girls must have a parent or representative attend, she said. and families across the county are working to collect items for fire fighters and those who lost their homes to recent Central Texas fires that continue to burn.

Items needed for those firemen trying to stop the flames include bottled water, bottled Gatorade, chapstick, high protein snacks (peanut butter and crackers, protein bars, trail mix, etc), along with monetary donations.

There are several families who have lost everything. Donations are being accepted for personal items, clothing (sorted and labeled by size, etc.) and of course, monetary donations.

There are currently four drop off locations in Milam County for the 4-H Club’s drive. They are Milam County Extension Office (100 E. 1st Street in Cameron), Family Hair Salon in Thorndale, Rockdale Memorial Company in Rockdale and Gause ISD.

Milano HIgh School’s National Honor Society and Student Council groups are also collecting items for the fire volunteers and victims.

Along wtih water, Gatorade, protein snacks and monetary donations, they are accepting items such as deodorant, toothpaste, soap and shampoo.
