Tax rebates still down slightly
AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced last week that state sales revenue in August was $1.98 billion, up 11.9 percent compared to August 2010.
Combs sent out September sales tax allocations totaling $483.9 million to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts, up 10 percent compared to the same time last year, according to the Comptroller’s office.
Numbers and rebates are still down for half of the area, with Rockdale, Cameron and Buckholts down for the year in sales tax allocations. Thorndale,
Milano and Lexington are up slightly for the year.
Milam is the only area county down for the year. Bell, Burleson, Falls and Lee counties all show a positive change for the year.
Rockdale’s rebate check for September 2011 was $44,933, compared to $45,361 for September 2010.
The city is down 13.4 percent for the year, receiving $465,581 in 2011.
Milam County’s check for September was $ 84,546, up from $66,024 a year ago.
However, the county’s total of $748,598 is still down 4.7 percent for the year.
The sales tax figures represent sales that occurred in July.
STATEWIDE—“Monthly sales tax revenue has now increased for 17 consecutive months,” said Combs. “For the state’s recently concluded 2011 fiscal year, sales tax revenue increased 9.4 percent from the previous fiscal year.”
Texas cities received $323.7 million, up 8.6 percent compared to September 2010. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 6.8 percent compared to the same time period last year.
So far this year, sales tax allocations to counties are running 14.1 percent ahead of this point in 2010, with $30.7 million going out to them in September.
Combs also sent $21.6 million to special purpose taxing districts, up 17 percent compared to September a year ago. Transit systems in the state received a total of $107.9 million in sales tax allocations for September, up 7.7 for the year.
