Milam volunteers ready to ‘Go Texan’
Over the years, the Milam County Area Go Texan program has grown and many activities have been added. These activities include competing in the World Championship Barbecue Cookoff contest held annually at the Houston Reliant Park complex, team penning, team sorting, washer pitching, horseshoe pitching, dominoes and a quilt contest.
The Area Go Texan program also participates in activities with surrounding area counties, as well as sponsoring local activities to raise funds for scholarships for Milam County youth.
The Milam County Area Go Texan committee ser ves as a publicity liaison between the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and surrounding counties. Each county has its own ambassador and subcommittee to organize and distribute printed materials and obtain coverage of Go Texan activities.
Rebecca Tomascik of Cameron is the ambassador for Milam County. Sandra Waiser of Rockdale and Barbara Scroggins of Thorndale are members of the leadership committee.
As a result of participation in Go Texan activities, one Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Go Texan scholarship is awarded to a qualified, outstanding student representing each Go Texan county.
Through Milam County’s participation in the Area Go Texan programs, scholarships can be earned for local youth each year. Milam County Area Go Texan awarded eight Milam County students a total of $22,000 in college scholarships in 2011. The funding for these scholarships came from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and the Milam County Area Go Texan.
Milam County Area Go Texan is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation. It is a chartered, charitable organization and their bylaws emphasize scholarships. The committee consists of 18 local people who are committed to achieving the goals set annually for participation.
