Band members deserve support of Tiger fans

Dear editor,

I am w riting this letter to encourage support of the Rockdale High School Big Blue Band.

I am very disappointed in the Rockdale community. I witnessed first hand the communities’ lack of respect for our students.

During the Cameron-Rockdale game halftime performance Cameron’s band was awesome. They blasted our stands and I have to say that I applaud the Cameron directors, students, and the Cameron community as a whole, because they back their kids no matter what they choose to participate in.

As the Rockdale band took the field I had to listen to remarks from people in the Rockdale stands about their size and their sound the entire halftime performance.

At some points I couldn’t hear the band over the amount of talking in the stands. These are your children, our children, MY children. They get up every day and stand out in the heat for hours to perform for you at halftime.

Those kids believe that they are doing something great and it is our job as Rockdale High School alumni to support them.

They deserve the same respect as the football players, the cheerleaders and the Golden Girls, because without any of them, Friday night football wouldn’t be the same.

The band program is heading in the right direction. We have two great directors, Adrian Acevedo and Lance Walker who are very supportive of the Rockdale traditions and with the help of the Band Boosters we are all working together to bring those traditions back.

However, without the support of the community it is very difficult. So the next time the Big Blue Band takes the field at halftime, support them.

I will be willing to bet that probably half of you were at one time a member of the Big Blue Band from Tigerland.

Let me end with a question for each one of you.

Remember the pride that you felt as you walked off that field to the home bleachers standing up on their feet and cheering for you?

Don’t you think that our children deserve that same respect and that same support?
