Voluntar y rec ycling part of plan

Just because at-the-curb recycling isn’t part of the contract approved last week by the city council with its new trash collection service, that doesn’t mean local residents won’t have a recycling option.

City Manager Kelvin Knauf said IESI, which will become Rockdale’s trash collection firm on Jan. 1, has committed to provide a “drop-off” recycling center for use by its customers.

“ We haven’t decided on the location yet,” Knauf said. “But this will be an option for Rockdale trash customers who want to recycle.”

At-the-curb recycling was an option mulled by the city council over the past few months but Knauf said it would have added about $5 per month to residential garbage collection bills.

At the curb recycling could be added in the future by council action.

The major change will be a sw itch from tw ice- a-week to once-a-week collection.
